Quantitative data are numbers, such as the percentage of families with children or the probability of divorce.
Quantitative data do a good job describing the frequency of a phenomenon and determining causal relationships between variables; qualitative data are better for revealing commonalities, processes, and meaning.
For example, quantitative data on the transition to motherhood might measure how many women in the United States take paid parental leave; the length of that leave; and the number of hours per week mothers are employed when they do go back to work.
Quantitative data could also analyze how these patterns vary by education level, race-ethnicity, or relationship status.
Quantitative data are most often collected through surveys.
